Work Hard, Live Well: Creating a Life Beyond Your Job Title

Setting the Scene

For the longest time, when someone asked me to tell them about myself, my job title was the first thing that came to mind. And yet, I judged myself for it—either feeling like I wasn’t where I should be or worrying that others had pre-conceived notions about me based on my title. It was a vicious cycle: my identity was wrapped up in something I felt I had to explain away. Before I knew it, my work consumed me. I’d dream of spreadsheets, wake up in the middle of the night remembering tasks I forgot to complete, and feel like I could never fully unplug.

Don’t get me wrong—if your career is what ignites you, that’s a beautiful thing. But even if you love your work, it’s not the entirety of who you are. You are joy and grit and light. You are frustration and resilience and love. You are everything you can feel—a masterpiece and a work in progress, all at once.

Today, we’re talking about how to build a fulfilling life beyond your career while still excelling in your work.

Define Success on Your Terms

Success isn’t just about promotions and paychecks—it’s about alignment with what truly fulfills you. I remember seeking my parents’ advice on whether to take a promotion in a different state—California at the time. One parent asked how much money it paid; the other asked how I felt it would bring value to my life. That moment shifted my perspective. It made me realize that success isn’t just about external milestones—it’s about how your life aligns with what actually matters to you.

So, what makes you feel alive outside of work? What do you want your life to look like? I used to think joy had to come from big, extraordinary moments. But now, I find it in the scent of espresso wafting through my loft on a slow Sunday morning, the golden hour light filtering through my windows, and the cicadas singing on an evening walk through the park.

Take a moment to define this for yourself: identify 3-5 personal values that matter most to you beyond work.

Craft an Intentional Life Outside of Work

How you spend your time outside of work matters just as much—if not more—than how you spend your time from 8 to 5. You can only show up as your best self if you are fulfilled in other areas of life.

I used to believe I had to be productive all the time. But I’ve learned that true fulfillment comes from intentional rest, creative outlets, and activities that bring joy—without a checklist attached.

For me, this means seeking out new experiences, whether it’s checking out an obscure concert, diving into a new book, or practicing a foreign language. And, of course, making time to write for all of you.

For you, this might mean exploring new music, taking a pottery class, or simply carving out an hour for a book you’ve been meaning to read. Whatever it is, schedule time this week for a personal passion—whether it’s a class, a new experience, or something that brings you joy.

Build Relationships that Go Beyond Networking

Some of my closest friendships started as work connections, so I’ll never knock workplace friendships. But meaningful relationships outside of work matter just as much.

Embrace the power of connection—whether it’s friends you work out with, friends you grab dinner with, or friends you stay up laughing with. The people in your life should remind you of who you are beyond your job title.

Having a strong community—whether it’s friends, family, or mentors—brings comfort and balance. Yes, learning to self-soothe is important, but as humans, we thrive on connection.

This week, reach out to a friend or loved one and plan a non-work-related catch-up.

Prioritize Well-being Like You Prioritize Work Goals

I used to be terrible at this. I’d say I was going to work out or meal prep, but when the workday stretched too long, I’d abandon my plans, too tired to cook or move.

Here’s my secret: I schedule personal time the same way I schedule work meetings. Yoga? On the calendar. Dinners with friends? Booked. Travel time to hair appointments? Non-negotiable.

And one simple rule changed my work-life balance: my laptop stays in my home office. No couch. No bed. No creeping into spaces of rest. Setting clear work-life boundaries—like defining working hours or keeping work devices out of rest spaces—helps create a much-needed separation between work and life.

Is it always perfect? No. But when I have to work late, I make sure to balance it out later in the week.

What about you? Identify one work-life boundary you want to strengthen and take one step toward it today.

Creating a fulfilling life isn’t about making huge changes all at once. It’s about small, intentional choices that align with your values. The more you prioritize the things that bring you joy, the more balanced and meaningful your life will feel.

And most importantly—give yourself permission to evolve. You are more than your job title. You are growth, creativity, love, and possibility. Let yourself become the fullest version of you.

Take a moment to reflect: What does an ideal, balanced life look like for you? What’s one small shift you can make today to move closer to it?
